He serves as Ohio Chapter President of the Indoor Environments Association, contributing to industry standards and radon awareness statewide.
Shad Evans is a nationally certified radon measurement and mitigation professional with more than 20 years of hands-on experience protecting families and property owners across the Columbus region from environmental toxins in the spaces where people live, work, and learn. Shad has been state-licensed by the Ohio Department of Health since 2004 and nationally certified by the National Radon Proficiency Program since October 2014.
In 2006, Shad founded Radon Be Gone and built a trusted team of mitigation professionals serving homeowners, real estate professionals, and commercial property owners across Central Ohio. Under his leadership, the company earned a reputation for technical excellence and dependable service, recognized as a six-time Angie’s List Super Service Award winner.
In 2021, Shad and his team joined Protect Environmental, expanding their capabilities with national consulting and construction resources, laboratory support, and large-scale project infrastructure while continuing to serve the Columbus community. Today, Shad continues to lead the Ohio operation and apply technical precision, field expertise, and leadership experience to both residential and complex commercial mitigation projects.
Shad has been an active member of the Indoor Environments Association (IEA, formerly the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists, AARST) since 2011. He has served as President of the Ohio Chapter from 2015 to 2026, contributing to professional education, advancing industry standards, and promoting radon awareness throughout the state and beyond.
His involvement at both the state and national levels demonstrates a long-standing commitment to raising the bar for radon measurement accuracy and mitigation system performance. As Ohio Association of Radon Professionals (OARP) President, Shad is a primary point of contact for radon professionals, regulators, and homeowners across Ohio.
Shad holds multiple credentials through the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP), the credentialing division of AARST and the recognized authority for radon professional certification in the United States:
Shad’s continuous Ohio licensure since 2004 and his triple NRPP certification (Measurement, Mitigation, and Multi-Family) make him one of the most credentialed radon professionals in the state.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas and a leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Shad’s measurement expertise includes:
Shad’s background as both a Measurement Professional and a Mitigation Specialist gives him a comprehensive understanding of how accurate testing directly informs effective system design.
With more than two decades of field experience, Shad has designed and installed thousands of mitigation systems across Central Ohio’s diverse housing stock and commercial properties. He is particularly experienced in multi-family properties, where system design must balance performance, scalability, and occupant disruption.
Shad’s mitigation experience includes:
His technical approach favors methodical diagnosis before implementation, identifying radon hotspots and confirming airflow throughout the foundation rather than defaulting to template solutions.

Yes. Many counties across Central Ohio have moderate to high radon potential. The EPA classifies several Ohio counties in Zone 1 (the highest of three radon zones), and the Ohio Department of Health actively licenses radon professionals to ensure accurate testing and effective mitigation. Testing is the only way to determine levels in a specific home or building.
The Ohio Department of Health licenses radon professionals to ensure they meet state requirements for measurement and mitigation work. A Licensed Radon Specialist (RS) is qualified to conduct radon testing across residential and commercial settings. Shad has held license RS157 continuously since 2004, and the Protect Environmental Ohio entity holds Radon Contractor license RC 174.
Multi-family properties often have interconnected soil gas pathways and diverse foundation types, requiring layered mitigation design and performance testing to ensure consistency and occupant safety across units. NRPP multi-family certifications (which Shad holds) are the recognized credential for this work, and AARST/ANSI multi-family measurement standards apply.
National leader in radon mitigation, vapor intrusion, and indoor air quality. The Columbus team operates as the former Radon Be Gone, founded in 2006 by Shad Evans and now part of Protect Environmental.
